Insulin-like
Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) is the body's principle growth factor
IGF-1 also known as somatomedin C, is a polypeptide compound
produced from HGH (Human Growth Hormone). HGH is the main
hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. Cell reproduction
slows down as we age; unless they are prompted by the growth
factors they go into a resting phase. They enable the cells
in the hormonal, immune, and nervous systems to communicate
and coordinate their growth, death, regeneration, and functioning. As HGH enters through
your bloodstream, from the pituitary gland your liver turns
it into IGF-1. HGH is usually produced during sleep or during
strenuous physical activity, There is a direct coralation
between the HGH in the pituitary and IGF-1 in the liver that
controls the increase of HGH levels at night and the increase
of IGF-1 levels during the day. The highest concentration
of growth factors are found in the first few hours after birth.
Unfortunately, IGF-1 is a diminishing resource
in an aging body. With the decline of the pituitary secretion
of HGH, there is a corresponding drop in IGF-1 levels, yet
the bodies demand for IGF-1 does not decrease. Hence the physical
exuberance and vitality of youth recedes, further contributing
to the process and experience of aging. IGF-1
is a powerful growth-promoting metabolite whose production
peaks during adolescence to accelerate body growth and development.
IGF-1 is required for normal growth and health maintenance.
IGF-1 has been shown to increase the transport of amino acids
into muscle cells throughout the body, thus regenerating these
tissues after exercise. It helps to transfer
glucose through the cell membranes and helps to supply the
raw materials that cells need for growth and repair. It also
regulates cell growth by moving the cells from the resting
phase to the active phase of its cycle and it increases the
cell's ability to complete DNA synthesis. According to European
researchers, IGF-1 initiates the transport of nucleic acids
into the nucleus of the cell where DNA resides. It provides
the raw material needed to repair damage to the DNA and initiates
cell division. Clinical evidence shows that low IGF-1 levels
play a key role in the degenerative changes brought about
with aging. By the time
a person reaches 60 years of age, their body may produce only
25% of the HGH levels produced during adolescence. Scientists
believe that this reduction in HGH and IGF-1 production as
we age is associated with many age-related declines in the
human body, such as graying hair, wrinkled skin, loss of sexual
desire and function, decreased energy, increased body fat,
and more. Keep in mind that
IGF-1 is a hormone product. Hormone therapy is not an exact
science, and you should always consult your physician before
taking a hormonal product. Hormone therapy and hormonal supplements
affect different people in different ways, so caution should
always be exercised. IGF-1 is not a cure-all when it comes
to stunted growth or abnormal hormone production. Again,
the advice of a physician is strongly urged. |
